Controllable Urban Soundscapes

– Making public spaces tranquil –

Peaceful parks amid city centre hustle and bustle. London and Gothenburg are test areas.

In the innovation project Controllable Urban Soundscapes, oases of tranquility are created in the midst of city centres. Traffic disturbances and noise levels are attenuated using advanced technology, based on the acoustic principles isolation, diffusion and absorption. IMCG leads the project and is responsible for the innovation process, strategic communication and new business solutions. The technology concept is tested in parks and public spaces in London and Gothenburg. The solution can also be applied to other outdoor areas where a different soundscape is desirable such as pre-school areas, high ways and living areas. Three demonstrators has been built and shows a fantastic result of decreasing the noise levels with up to 20 dB.

Partners in the project are the cities of London, Södra Änggården through Platzer, Akademiska HusJohanneberg Science Park, RISE, the Department of cultural sciences at University of GothenburgWatteriet AB and Alufront. The initiative is an innovation project within Vinnova’s Challenge-driven Innovation programme for “Sustainable Attractive Cities”.
