Sustainable laundry with district heating

2015-06-03

One hundred washing machines, using warm water from the City district heating system, have been officially inaugurated in Gårdsten northeast of Gothenburg.

Instead of heating the water with electricity, the machines use waste heat from Gothenburg industries and waste incineration. This saves at least 50 per cent of the energy used.

The machines were installed by Göteborg Energi as a part of the EU project Celsius. The project promotes new applications and extended use of district heating and cooling in Europe, as a contribution to sustainable cities. For the housing company Gårdstensbostäder, this is part transitioning from a socially disadvantaged area to a sustainable and forward-looking neighbourhood.
